There is a whole world of manufacturing processes that are getting tweaked and reinterpreted by some clever designers. This is no boring book on injection moulding although that is in here. This is a book for designers who want to know about manufacturing process. It is very telling that older processes like casting are given equal value to digital processes. At the end of the day to a designer the process serves the product and all are worth looking at.
The interesting thing to note is that many of the processes are tweaked for the sake of the design. So this book really is about manufacturing for the sake of design, and this message comes through in the examples that are chosen. There is nothing dull here. In every case you see the design process in action as well as given a front row seat for the manufacturing process. Liberally illustrated, the author knows her audience – designers.
This book sets out to inspire and inform. Firstly, each product is used to illustrate a manufacturing process, but more than this, each product has great design merit in and of itself.
Fifty product designs from concept to manufacture.
