Iconic Architecture theory and modelmaking

The "Bilbao Effect" is a classroom ready project that addresses some of the big concerns of architecture, including how buildings can have meaning. Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is used as a case study. This course is both theoretical and practical. We will cover the teaching material from the unit of work and develop architectural models of our own design based in response to the theory. We will also cover teaching strategies particular to this unit of work. |

Two design projects: ‘Memphis pencase’ and ‘making waves’

This course introduces two classroom tested design projects aimed at year 7‐8 students. 'Memphis Pencase' is a good introduction to wood as a design material as well as the theory behind the Memphis design style. Equal emphasis is placed on both design capability and design awareness. 'Making waves' is a boat design project covering some of the technical aspects of hull design as well as introducing students to plastics forming and providing an excellent evaluative experience. Participants will learn the theory and teaching strategies behind these two winner projects. All aspects of the units of work will be addressed as well as step‐by‐step explanations of the making processes. There will be no opportunity to make the projects during the course, but participants will be provided with sets of materials. |
