CNC Technology in the Classroom

CNC machines (computer controlled routers and lathes) offer a stunning variety of opportunities in the design and technology classroom. This course will demonstrate possibilities for how to use CNC machinery to its best advantage, while increasing teacher confidence and expertise. CNC machines provide amazing accuracy in developing 2 and 3D shapes out of a range of materials, however the creativity of the student needs to remain the driving force. This course introduces teachers to this powerful technology covering the details of setting up the equipment, optimisation, maintenance and software use. This is a day where you can get to know the CNC machining process without interruption and with ample opportunity to ask questions. Workshop - Equipment Competency

This is a hands on demonstration of common school workshop equipment, namely: disc sander, scroll saw, band saw, compound saw, table saw, drill press and router table. Graphics Booster - Graphic techniques for the design process

Design and creativity is underpinned by an ability to draw. There are plenty of drawing techniques to use, but this course concentrates on methods that are teachable and usable in the classroom and reinforce the design process. Concept sketching, sketch rendering techniques, perspective and presentation layout techniques are explained and demonstrated. Plastics forming in the classroom

Working with plastics offers designers many exciting possibilities. The broad range of properties makes them very adaptable to the classroom. The main emphasis of this course is on plastics forming processes including vacuum forming, line bending, injection molding, hot-wire cutting and dome blowing.. There will be an opportunity to look at the cultural history of plastics and the suitability of various types of plastics for the classroom. There will be demonstrations, discussions on the design opportunities plastic offers as well as the safety issues and the opportunity to develop skills through a hands-on session.

‘Memphis Pencase’ - Wood Design Project

Good design projects introduce students to new skills and give them the opportunity to flex their creativity at the same time. The 'Memphis Pencase' design project achieves these two challenging outcomes. Aimed at Yr7-8, students are introduced to a range of design skills including introductory graphics, design theory, and simple wood-working. This project is an excellent introduction to the many components that make up the design process and the students end up with a product they want to take home. This course is all about how to run the 'Memphis Pencase' project. Pariticipants will learn the theory and delivery methods as well as go through a design process, making their own 'Memphis Pencase'.
